As the name suggest, they’re easily mistaken for a hornet, but they’re harmless to humans. Recorded as the largest species of Hoverfly in the UK.

I spend countless hours in the warmer months hunting down insects but some days I just casually glance down and there they are. I’m over winter, bring on spring sunshine.

Set out looking for frogs, came out with a Great Green Bush Cricket. One handed macro isn’t the easiest, even when the subject is this big but he stuck on my finger just long enough before gliding off into the reeds.

Spend a little time in the long grass, have a little patience and learn to be stealthy as. The problem with these darters is they like to hide low down so getting a clean background was a nightmare.

Also known as Shield Bugs, these can be found on almost any vegetation. Believed to have originated from Ethiopia.

Not everyday you get to hold one of these bad boys. I could actually feel little pin pricks form it’s tiny claws gripping my hand! Half expected it to have a little nibble on my finger.
The name comes from a skull like pattern on it’s head.
